One day it hit me that I did not want to be a nice and open-minded sister anymore. I started to feel like the world was out to get me. As I grew older, I realized my sister had gotten everything much earlier than I did. Going to Juilliard Pre-college was my dream since I was a little girl.   No one ever pushed me to audition though. Nobody either told me to go to the city and find a Juilliard professor until I was twelve years old. I began my studies and auditioned a year later. The task of getting into Juilliard Pre-College would be a lot less daunting for my sister because she started when she was six. I felt cheated. Why should my sister get so many more opportunities when I worked just as hard, if not harder, as she did when I was young? By the time I learned of opportunities, it was already too late to change my whole life and fully commit to my goals. I felt like my sister got these advantages simply because she was born after me. Many times I wanted to pull my hair out! But as school got busier, I did not have the time or energy to feel spiteful of my adorable sister. Expecting good marks in a significant number of AP courses, my mild overbearing nature was dimmed.   My ultimate focus became the destination, not the looming obstacles. I am not the victim. We are all victims of our own lives if we choose to live so calculatingly. I took what I got from my one year of training as a grain of salt and brought my musical abilities to a new level.   Essentially I practiced three hours daily. The day I got the call from Juilliard was by far the happiest day of my life. This feeling of fulfilling my dream effaced traces of envy. Had I let my moments of envy blind me with darkness, many obstacles would have tripped me. Musical accomplishments, academic excellence, and development of character would have been my obstacles. I very easily could have grown into an angered adolescent as opposed to a compassionate lady. With everything I did in life, I gave more than a hundred percent commitment. Most of the time, it paid off. Now I realize it’s good to have such a versatile sister because she understands what I went through. There is definitely room for two shining gems in my family. I’m really glad I learned to have an open mind to my sister’s successes early in life, because the pettiness would have greatly hindered my potential. It would be more traumatic if I were to learn one day that it was my over-calculating nature that inhibited my performance level in everything that I excel in now. I’ve learned for the future to never feel jealous and small for any length of time. I have to be competitive, perceptive, and ambitious but never angry and deprived. Yes! This is what drives success. Jim Douglas, a republican, might see some logic in the proposal if the federal highway money was not Involved. † (Bullock, 2005). Why would federal highway money be Involved? It didn’t make sense to me, so I wanted to explore that further. When I searched for federal highway money, I came upon the National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984 (AMANDA). This Act required all states to raise their minimum purchase and public possession of alcohol to age 21 . States that did not comply faced a reduction in highway funds, under the Federal Highway Act. (Hanson, n. D). So this brings me back to one of my original questions, why was the age 21 chosen? I found that becoming a full adult at age 21 dates back to English common law. President Franklin Roosevelt lowered the draft age from 21 to 18 during World War II, eventually during the Vietnam era, people were upset that they were old enough to enlist in the forces, but now old enough to vote, so in 1971 they applied that same logic to drinking and lowered the age to 18. (Tree, 2008). Why would they want to change the age back to 21, I wonder? Apparently, certain states had stricter rules and teens would drive to other states that had less off strict drinking rule, drink and drive back and depending where they lived, the further out they were, the more probable it was for an alcohol related incident. (Tree, 2008). So Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MAD) fought to have the drinking age back to 21 and that’s when the AMANDA was set forth in 1984. (Tree, 2008). Now that I had all the dates figured out and who prompted the changes, I wanted to see if changing the drinking age actually had an effect on decreasing alcohol related incidents. I found that statistically in 1984, that alcohol related fatalities made up for 54% of all fatalities and 23 years later, in 2007, only 37% of alcohol related fatalities made up for all fatalities. (Alert. Com, 2006). So again, back to one of my original thoughts, I wanted to see opinions from a litany stand point. I came upon some writings from Air Force Colonel Celebrities, who wrote that Junior enlisted, ages 18-24 made up 1/3 of the Air Force and accounted for 81% of the alcohol related incidents. He said that on average, the Air Force has about 5,300 alcohol related incidents annually, so that means 4,293 of those incidents basically belonged to the Junior enlisted. Cool. Celebrities said that the military message, â€Å"Work hard, Play hard,† was sending the wrong message. (Slouchier, 2007). After a long day of work, you go out and play hard, what better of way, than to drink and relax, but there are other ways of relaxing than drinking. As I was concluding my research, still not yet satisfied with my results, I found a website that was written by Jim Hall, from the National Transportation Board, who had all these statistics that stated how alcohol related fatalities had gone down, alcohol related suicides reduced and the number of DEW Military Drinking Age 3 arrests had decreased since raising the age of drinking to 21 . How is it that only the negative stereotypes are more widely known throughout most college campuses? Although the preconceived notions about greeks are that hey all lie, cheat, drink, party all night, get into trouble, dont offer anything positive to society and most of all pay money to buy their friends. Yes, some greeks may fit some of these descriptions, but not all. In a questionnaire given to Ho Le of the Central Florida Chapter of the Delta Upsilon International Fraternity explains how organizations can portray themselves positively to local society. Our Community service must be presented better to the public, so that everyone is aware of our projects, and that we do help the community in our own ways. Greek organizations must also stop completely the actions that the public associates with us, and sometimes holds true, including (and not limited to) hazing, binge drinking and the use of drugs at parties. A philanthropic event also known as community service is a vital part of greek life. For example Alpha Xi Delta Sororitys national philanthropy is Choose Children, which is a way for various chapters to raise money for local children organizations in their community. They also hold an annual Xi-Man competition for the fraternities on campus in order to raise money for local childrens charities. As well as being involved with ones fraternity or sorority, greek life helps one become involved on their campus. Leadership opportunities are made more available to the greek system. Through social interaction with your greek organization you are educated with vast opportunities of leadership on campus and even within your local chapter. Running for office within student government is not your only option for leadership. Within each greek organization there are many positions that offer great leadership advancements. Not just in college life, but with experience in greek life it can help you progress in the real world. For example, when one goes to an interview, it is much like going through the rush and pledging periods. When one is rushed and pledged it can be evenly compared with the interview and hiring stages of getting a job. Therefore, experiencing it earlier in life will better prepare you for future occupations. While alcohol abuse, other drug use, and underage drinking among college students are by no means limited to greek organizations, it is important to target fraternity and sorority members with prevention efforts. A 1993 survey of over 17,000 students at 140 four-year colleges in 40 states found that 86 percent of students who lived in fraternities were binge drinkersthat is, had consumed at lest five drinks at one sitting during the previous two weekscompared with 50 percent of male students overall. Although greeks may represent a small percentage of the total student population at most schools, fraternity and sorority members generally have considerable influence on the social scene and the social norms on campus. Greeks Advocating Mature Management of Alcohol, or GAMMA, the greek arm of this network, was started in 1987 as a way to involve fraternity and sorority members in alcohol education on campus. This organization (GAMMA) works in conjunction with the greek organizations to help control alcohol consumption at socials and registered parties. Being in a greek organization does not go without dues. Yes, most people may think that being in a sorority or fraternity means that you have bought your friendships. Everything that one can gain by experiencing greek life is much more valuable than the amount of money spent for dues. Almost every club on campus requires some type of dues to be paid, so greeks are not the only ones paying. The life experience one gains through the sorority or fraternity can greatly help one become an active citizen in society. Trying to search for a job that suits the needs of ones life and to provide what the employer wants, is much like going through the rush process. Rush is a way for the current fraternity or sorority members to meet and interview potential new members (pledges).
